Essential Oil of the Month: Peppermint (Mentha x Piperita)

Peppermint essential oil is distilled from the leaves of the plant.

Peppermint is antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal. It is said to be an insect repellent. (One client is testing this property on ants. We'll see how that goes.)

The sparkling, fresh scent of peppermint is wonderful for fighting mental fatigue and helping the mind to focus. This oil is also helpful for headaches, migraines, sinus congestion and digestive issues.

Interesting peppermint fact: Gabriel Mojay, in Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit, says peppermint "was used by the Ancient Egyptians as a ritual perfume, and was an ingredient in the sacred incense kyphi. In Ancient Greece and Rome, mint was an everyday part of life, used to scent bath water, and in powdered form, bedding."

Note: Do not use undiluted essential oils on your skin. Do not take internally.

Peppermint contraindicated for people with GERD or gallbladder inflammation. (Marge Clark, Essential Oils and Aromatics, p 90.)
